Pictures From The Raider's Visit

A Nice Raider's Surprise

Today our students received a nice treat. Darrius Heyward-Bey #85 (Wide Receiver) and Matt Shaughnessy #77 (Defensive End) from the Oakland Raiders stopped by to talk with the students about setting goals and living healthy.

In addition to giving great advice, both players gave a donation of $10,000.00 on behalf of NFL Play 60.

Students who showed significant academic growth in ELA were able to join both player and the Raiderettes in a physical education class.

The Raiders Are Showing Some Love to Thurgood Marshall Elementary Students

In honor of the work that was done during Jack Tatum Day, the NFL has chosen our school to be the recipients of a $10,000.00 Health and Wellness Grant.

In addition to this generous donation, two outstanding and dynamic Raider players will host a school wide assembly and exercise session for our students who have made gains in reading.

I am proud to say that I am from a city that takes care of its youth.

Way to go Raiders, loving that silver and black energy!

Please note, activities will be open to students, faculty and staff only.

Health and Wellness Services Needed

It has become increasingly evident that we need health services available for our children.
Unfortunately, the school does not have the funds to sustain such a project. I am asking that our families and supporters begin to advocate on our behalf. Please speak with the medical professionals that you know and ask them if they would be willing to donate 1 day every two months to support the health of our students. They can call me at 510-639-3275 to learn more about this need.

Blessings, Mrs. Woods-Cadiz

Today we had a community member shadow the principal and become the " principal for the day".

It was a positive experience, we at Thurgood Marshall are doing important and exciting work and it is crucial that we get our story out.

Congratulations Mrs. Greene

Congratulations! We are pleased to inform you that one of our teachers, Emily Greene, has won a $25,000 grant for your school through the Chevron Classroom Challenge!

Ms. Greene submitted a STEM-focused classroom project to DonorsChoose.org that demonstrated a commitment to excellence and innovation that their panel of judges felt was above and beyond the many submissions they received from across Contra Costa and Alameda counties. The Chevron Classroom Challenge grant of $25,000 will be awarded to our school for use in supporting more STEM academic programs, just like the one submitted by Ms. Greene.

In addition to receiving the grant, Chevron will also be recognizing Ms. Greene at a Chevron Classroom Challenge Awards Dinner at the Concord Hilton.

To further acknowledge our school’s commitment to excellence and innovation in education, Chevron will be sending us a banner to recognize Thurgood Marshall Elementary School as a Chevron Classroom Challenge winner.

Way To Go Mrs. Greene!

The Marshall Story

Did you know?

Thurgood Marshall Elementary Students are 27% identified speech and language handicap and 85% percent of students were free and reduced students?

In spite of these daunting numbers we increased the number of students who were succeeding in math by almost 13 percent and decreased the number of students who were failing in math by almost 12 percent. In addition, our API grew by 18 points.

Over half of our students participate in in a fully comprehensive intervention and enrichment program that increases the student's instructional days to 90 additional

Our students have access to dance, choral, instrumental, Spanish, library research, cooking, and gardening.

We focus on student mastery of the Math and English Language Arts standards and provide a rigorous academic schedule for all of our students.

If we measured the level of proficiency of our children without Speech and Language challenges we would meet the state requirement for ELA

Get to know us and then spread the good news!

Finding Funding

In this era of decreased funding we have been able maintain an environment of a caring community, academic rigor, and familial support.

Maintaining this is not easy and we have had to be creative. One of these creative ideas is our Harvest Time Block Party. October 29th, we will open our site to have a block party. Come out and lend a hand, call the 510-639-3275 for further information.
